Cambridge, Ontario – October 2026 – ATS Industrial Automation, in partnership with Bruce Power, is celebrating a major milestone in nuclear refurbishment technology following a record-setting achievement during Bruce Power’s Unit 4 Major Component Replacement (MCR) project.
Leveraging ATS’s Automated Calandria Tube Installation (CTI) tooling, the project team at Bruce Power successfully completed the installation of 480 Calandria Tubes during Unit 4’s MCR outage which was completed with a high degree of quality and 25 days ahead of the same milestone in Unit 3, setting yet another record in CANDU refurbishment history.
The achievement highlights the continued success of an innovative automation solution developed by ATS and first deployed during Bruce Power’s Unit 3 refurbishment in 2025. The technology was designed to improve installation quality, enhance worker safety through radiation dose reduction, and accelerate project execution compared to traditional manual installation methods. Now in its second deployment on Unit 4, the tooling system has benefited from additional reliability enhancements and the experience of an expanded execution team.
“This milestone demonstrates what is possible when innovation, collaboration, and operational excellence come together,” said Matthew Wong, VP, Commercial and General Manager, Nuclear. “Years of engineering, machine building, systems integration, and continuous improvement have enabled us to automate a new portion of reactor refurbishment and deliver record-setting performance for our customer.”
The Automated Calandria Tube Installation system represents one of the most advanced tooling solutions developed for nuclear refurbishment. Behind the field performance are years of work by industry partners, ATS designers, engineers, machine builders, and integrators who solved complex technical challenges to create a highly precise and reliable automated installation process.
Bruce Power CEO and President Eric Chassard recently recognized the achievement, noting the significance of the milestone for the Unit 4 refurbishment project and the broader nuclear industry.
